Fleas are still very much a problem during the winter. Flea eggs live in the carpet for months and will happily hatch when you turn up the central heating. When preparing your car for winter, keep antifreeze well away from pets as it is palatable and deadly, also prevent access to any weed killers or other chemicals that may be harmful.
Bear in mind that the cooler weather may unmask arthritic disease and joint stiffness, so keep an eye on your pet’s mobility and comfort. It’s a good idea to keep a close eye on your pet’s weight since it’s all too easy for pets to gain a few extra pounds over the winter periods.
Spare a thought for pets that live outside such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and hens. Make sure their hutch is in a sheltered position and they have plenty of clean warm bedding. Keep an eye on the water containers making sure they don’t become frozen.
Inside the home, dogs and cats are prone to eating all manner of Christmas decorations – ribbon and tinsel being amongst the favourites for kittens and puppies. If swallowed they may cause an intestinal blockage. Similarly, make sure that turkey carcasses are safely disposed of.
When cats are not going out as much they also like to amuse themselves by chewing house plants. Beware of lilies which are very toxic to cats. All parts of the lily plant including the pollen are toxic, they can cause kidney failure.
Don’t forget chocolate, especially the plain varieties, they can be very toxic to dogs.
Avoid feeding grapes, raisins, and sultanas to dogs. Undoubtedly there will be fireworks over the festive period. This can be a stressful time for many pets and owners. It is advisable to consider therapies before the fireworks start. Natural pheromone anti-anxiety products like Feliway and Adaptil and Nutracalm are very beneficial. In severe cases of pet anxiety, we can prescribe sedatives. Most importantly stay calm and relaxed. Relaxed pets are happy pets!
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
